Every year the Board of Day School Education organizes the “Christmas Celebration Dinner.” This is meant for the impoverished of Watertown. Names of guests are solicited from the various social service agencies in town. Over a hundred individuals, many of them children, are treated to a very nice turkey meal with all the trimmings. There are organized crafts, pictures with Santa, and a presentation of the message of Christmas in English and Spanish. Occasionally there is a book drive in the weeks preceding the dinner. The books are sorted according to age categories, and the children are invited to choose several to take home with them. Also, Christmas gifts are purchased in advance for each child, wrapped, tagged, and given to the parents while their children are distracted with other activities. These are to be opened later, when the family celebrates their own Christmas. Finally, each family is also given a Christmas meal to take home, including a frozen turkey and all the trimmings. Local businesses help with the costs, but donations are needed as are many volunteers, to wrap, cook, mix and mingle. Watch for the sign-up sheets in the narthex.
